  2. Australia clinches the One-day International Tri-Series at Perth beating England by 112 runs.
  3. Leander Peas and his Swiss teammate Martina Hingis have won 2015 Australian Open mixed doubles title.*In the final they defeated Canadian-French team of Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic, in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3. 

Buisiness:

  1. Jet fuel (ATF) price today cut by a steep 11.3 per cent and now costs less than diesel. The price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, in Delhi was cut by Rs. 5,909.9 per kilolitre, or 11.27 per cent, to Rs. 46,513.02 per kl, oil companies announced today.

  1. 29th Surajkund International Crafts Mela has begun in Faridabad district of Haryana. It was inaugurated  by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar along with Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh.*The theme state this year is Chhattisgarh.*Lebanon is the Partner Nation of this year’s Mela and it will be open till 15 February 2015.
    *The 18 countries are participating in this year’s Mela. They are Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Thailand, Uganda and Syria.
    *It was started in 1987 and is held every year since then from February 1-15
  2. 18th National Conference on e-Governance was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from 30 January 2015 to 31 January 2015.*The main Theme of the Conference was Digital Governance – New Frontiers. The focus sector was Skill Development & Employability.*The conference was organised jointly by Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG)
  3. Wildlife SOS in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh (UP) Forest Department and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is launching Jackal Research & Translocation Project in UP.*Under this project, study and translocation of 30-35 wild jackals from Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra, Agra to safe natural habitat will be undertaken.
  4. The government is likely to accept the recommendation of a committee led by former Supreme Court judge G.P. Mathur to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
        *The panel, set up on December 23 last year, submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week. The riots, which followed assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, claimed over 3,000 lives, of which 2,000 fell prey to violence in Delhi.

  1. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is in China on a four-day visit and is accompanied by the new foreign secretary S Jaishankar.Mrs. Sushma Swaraj inaugurated2nd meeting of the India- China Media Forum in Beijing today.
  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China in May this year, ahead of the meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

Deaths:

  1. Renowned chemist Carl Djerassi has passed away in San Francisco, United States (US). He was 91.*He was famously known as the father of the birth control pills for his contribution to the development of oral contraceptive birth pills.
  2. Germany’s former President Richard von Weizsaecker has passed away on 31 January 2015. He was 94.

Appointements:

  1. T. Suvarna Raju took over as the 17th chairman of the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), following his predecessor R.K. Tyagi’s retirement.
